Berthoud
The Garden Spot of Colorado, a storybook downtown ringed by farmland, orchards, and quiet foothill roads.
Berthoud calls itself the Garden Spot of Colorado. It began in the 1860s as a stagecoach stop on the Little Thompson River and took its present name from Edward L. Berthoud, who surveyed the rail route through the valley. In the winter of 1883 and 1884 several of the town's buildings were put on wheels and hauled a mile north onto the bluff where Berthoud stands today; it incorporated in 1888. The land around it was farmed for alfalfa, sugar beets, wheat, corn and barley.
