Basecamp for Rocky Mountain National Park: elk in the streets, taffy on Elkhorn Avenue, and alpine views in every direction.
Estes Park is the eastern gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and the location of the park's headquarters. The town sits at about 7,522 feet on the Big Thompson River, in a large natural meadow of the kind locally called a park. The Stanley Hotel opened on its outskirts in 1909 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
