A First-Timer's Guide to Old Town Fort Collins

Old Town Fort Collins is the rare historic district that still behaves like a downtown. People live above the storefronts. The bike racks fill before the parking spaces do. On a summer evening the square is loud with people who came here on purpose and aren't in a hurry to leave.

It is also, famously, the streetscape Disney's Main Street U.S.A. drew from — a fact every Fort Collins resident will tell you within ten minutes of meeting you. Take the walk and you'll see why: three-story brick blocks from the 1880s, cast-iron detailing, and the foothills closing off the west end of every cross street.

Here's how to spend a first day in it without wasting any of it.

Morning: start on Mountain Avenue

Begin west of the square at Sunrise & Pine Coffee on West Mountain Avenue. It's a neighborhood roaster with a slow bar, house-made pastries, and a porch that fills with bikes on weekend mornings — which tells you most of what you need to know about how this town starts its day.

Doors open at 6:30 AM on weekdays and 7:00 AM on weekends, and the porch is the point: Mountain Avenue is a wide, tree-lined boulevard, and the walk east from here into the square is the best three blocks of the district.

Local move: get the pourover, not the drip, and take it outside even if it's forty degrees. Half the town will be doing the same.

Midday: walk the square, then the crates

Old Town Square itself is the anchor — a pedestrian plaza with fountains that kids run through all summer, benches, buskers, and a rotating cast of markets and festivals. If your timing is good, the NoCo Makers Market fills it with fifty-plus regional makers, growers, and food trucks — check the events calendar before you come.

A few steps off the plaza, Old Town Records & Curios is where an hour disappears. New pressings up front, deep used bins in back, and a listening booth that is genuinely dangerous to your afternoon. It opens at 10:00 AM on Saturdays and runs to 9:00 PM Thursday through Saturday — one of the later closes on the square, and a good reason to circle back after dinner.

Afternoon: a beer with a view of the barrels

Ridgeline Brewing Co. sits on Linden Street, a block off the river, and it is the natural first stop for anyone trying to understand Fort Collins beer. Sixteen taps, a barrel room visible from the bar, and a patio that catches the last of the evening sun coming off the foothills.

The tap list runs adventurous without abandoning the classics — reviewers consistently single out the flagship hazy IPA and the seasonal sour program, and the barrel-aged winter releases have a reputation for selling out the weekend they drop. Food trucks rotate nightly, dogs are welcome on the patio, and the back room runs trivia on Tuesdays and live bluegrass most Fridays.

Weekday doors are 3:00 PM; Saturday it opens at 11:00 AM and stays open to midnight. Order the flight rather than a pint — it doubles as a survey of what Northern Colorado brewing is doing right now. The listing usually carries a current offer worth checking before you order.

Evening: dinner on College

The Copper Spoon on South College Avenue is the district's argument that Fort Collins can do a serious dinner without a serious attitude. It's a seasonal New American kitchen built around Front Range farms, with a compact menu that changes with what the growers bring in.

Two scheduling notes that catch visitors out. It's closed Mondays, and Sunday is brunch only — 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, no dinner service. Tuesday through Thursday it runs 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and Friday and Saturday to 11:00 PM. Saturday is the one day you can eat here at any hour you like.

After dinner

Three options, all within a five-minute walk.

• Back to the square for whatever's happening on it — in October, the Old Town Harvest Festival closes the day with a lantern parade at dusk. See the events calendar for dates.

• The river. The Poudre runs a few blocks north of Linden, and the trail along it is lit, flat, and quiet after dark.

If you've got a second day

Get out of downtown. Poudre Canyon Outfitters runs guided rafting, fly-fishing schools, and canyon hikes on the Cache la Poudre — Colorado's only nationally designated Wild & Scenic river, and about twenty minutes from the square. Summer weekend raft slots book two to three weeks out once snowmelt peaks, so call before you plan around it.

Or rent wheels. Front Range Cycle Works sits a block off the Mason Trail on South Mason Street, does same-day tune-ups, and runs free flat-fix clinics the first Saturday of every month. Fort Collins is a town best understood from a bike, and the Mason Trail will take you the length of it without a single car.
